Chapter Fourteen

J ackie woke to the sun creeping through the curtains, her mind filled with memories of the night before. For a moment, she wondered if she had dreamt it all, but then she became aware of the weight of the arm which was draped across her waist and the heat from the body which lay behind her. She rolled over, and her body ached in a way it hadn’t done in a long time. She was greeted by the divine sight of Callie, asleep, her face peaceful and free of worry. She studied her; she was obviously older than the last time they had laid like this, but she was just as beautiful, if not more so. Gentle lines graced her face, she hoped through years of laughter, but she feared more through stress and unhappiness. There was a small scar across her forehead, which hadn’t been there when she was younger, her cheekbones were more pronounced, and there was just an air of something different she couldn’t put her finger on but came with maturity.

“I can feel you staring at me,” Callie mumbled from where her face was pushed into the pillow.

Jackie smiled and brushed a strand of hair that had fallen forward out of her face. Callie sighed and smiled softly at the action, eyes still closed. Jackie ran her fingers through her hair, scratching gently at her scalp, eliciting a hum from the slumbering body.

“Just admiring how beautiful you are now.”

“You mean to say I wasn’t beautiful before?” She cracked one eye open and quirked an eyebrow.

“You were always beautiful.” Jackie leaned down and pressed a kiss to her lips.

“Good save,” Callie said as she closed her eye again.

Jackie lay there, her head propped up on her arm, fingers combing through Callie’s hair, savouring the quiet moment. The sense of calm which lay between them was new; there was always something simmering in the background when they were together before, a fear of what would happen when people found out about them. But for some reason, that wasn’t present this time. Maybe now that they—Callie especially—were older, people wouldn’t worry so much about the age gap. Maybe it wouldn’t be such a big deal that they worked together either. Her fingers trailed down Callie’s shoulder, catching on the fabric of the vest she wore.
